Bangkok is Southeast Asia's most visited city — 22 million international arrivals per year. It's also one of the most overwhelming for first-timers. Here's how to navigate it with confidence.
The 5 Temples Worth Your Time
Wat Pho — Reclining Buddha (Must Do)
45-metre reclining golden Buddha, covered feet with 108 mother-of-pearl inlaid panels. Entry ฿300. Less than 10 minutes walk from the Grand Palace. Morning visits (8am opening) have smaller crowds. Traditional Thai massage available inside the complex — ฿420 for 30 minutes, legitimately excellent quality.
Wat Arun — Temple of Dawn (Best at Sunset)
Across the river from Wat Pho (short ferry ฿5). The spires are covered in ceramic tile fragments — extraordinary detail up close. Climb to the middle level for Chao Phraya River views. Best photographed from across the river at sunset when the spires glow.
Wat Phra Kaew / Grand Palace
Thailand's most important temple and palace complex. Entry ฿500 — includes Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha). Dress code strictly enforced — cover shoulders and knees; sarongs available to rent at entry. Arrive at 8:30am opening to beat tour groups that flood in by 10am.
Wat Traimit — Golden Buddha (Underrated)
Houses the world's largest solid gold Buddha — 3 tonnes, 15th century. In Chinatown. Almost no tourists despite being extraordinary. Entry free. Combine with Yaowarat (Chinatown) street food.
Wat Benchamabophit — Marble Temple (Peaceful)
Beautiful white Carrara marble temple near the parliament. Most peaceful major temple in Bangkok — far fewer visitors than the riverside cluster. Entry ฿50.

Transport: Grab Beats Everything
- Grab: Fixed metered price, no negotiation, air-conditioned car. Best choice 95% of the time. Download and register before arrival.
- BTS Skytrain: Essential for Sukhumvit–Silom axis. Avoids traffic entirely. Buy Rabbit Card for tap-in tap-out.
- MRT: Underground metro, connects Chatuchak, Chinatown, Silom area.
- Taxi: Always insist on meter (look for "TAXI-METER" sign). Never accept a flat-rate quote from curbside taxis.
- Tuk-tuk: For short temple hops only. Always negotiate price BEFORE getting in. Ignore tuk-tuks offering "special tours" — always a gem shop scam.
Surviving Bangkok Heat 2026
Bangkok summer (April–October): 35–39°C with high humidity. Practical tips:
- Do temple visits 8–10am. Rest in malls 11am–3pm. Explore again from 4pm.
- Every 7-Eleven (abundant) sells cold water for ฿10. Enter freely for AC.
- Terminal 21 and Siam Paragon malls are excellent free air-conditioned escapes
- Hydration: drink 3+ litres of water daily. Coconut water from street vendors (฿30) is genuinely rehydrating.
