Hotel Zone vs Downtown Cancun
Hotel Zone (Zona Hotelera): The 22km strip of resort hotels along the Caribbean coast. Beautiful beach, expensive restaurants, crowded. If you are in a resort, this is where you are staying.
Downtown Cancun (Centro): Where actual Mexicans live and eat. 10-minute taxi from the Hotel Zone. Parque de las Palapas has street food stalls with proper Mexican food at 10-20% of Hotel Zone prices. Worth the journey for any meal.
Top Day Trips from Cancun
- Chichen Itza (3 hours by bus or car): One of the New Seven Wonders of the World. El Castillo pyramid and the Ball Court. Arrive at 8am opening to beat heat and crowds. Telcel works throughout the site.
- Cenote Dos Ojos / Cenote Ik Kil: Underground freshwater caves with turquoise water. Ik Kil is 30 minutes from Chichen Itza — combine both in one day trip. Telcel signal at the cenote surface.
