Got your travel eSIM but not sure how to set it up? Don't worry — it takes about 2 minutes, and you can do it before you even leave home. This guide walks you through it step by step for both iPhone and Android.
Before You Start
Make sure of two things first:
- Your phone is eSIM-compatible. Most phones from 2018 onward are: iPhone XR/XS and newer, Google Pixel 3 and newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer, and many others.
- Your phone is carrier-unlocked. If you bought your phone outright or it's paid off, it's almost certainly unlocked.
💡 Tip: Install your eSIM while you still have Wi-Fi at home. You only need internet for the installation — once it's installed, it activates automatically when you arrive at your destination.
How to Install on iPhone
1️⃣ After your purchase, you'll receive a QR code by email.
2️⃣ On your iPhone, go to Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Data) → Add eSIM.
3️⃣ Tap Use QR Code and scan the QR code from your email (open it on another screen, or save it and choose it from your photos).
4️⃣ Follow the prompts to add the plan. Label it something like "Travel".
5️⃣ Done! Your eSIM is installed and ready.
How to Install on Android
Steps vary slightly by brand, but generally:
1️⃣ Open the QR code email.
2️⃣ Go to Settings → Network & Internet → SIMs (or Mobile Network) → Add eSIM / Download a SIM instead.
3️⃣ Scan the QR code.
4️⃣ Confirm and download the plan.
5️⃣ Done!
When You Arrive at Your Destination
Once you land, do this to get online:
- Make sure your travel eSIM is selected for data in your settings.
- Turn on Data Roaming for the eSIM line (don't worry — this uses your eSIM's local network, not expensive roaming from your home carrier).
- Keep your home SIM active for calls and texts if you like — your eSIM handles the data.
Troubleshooting
- No connection after landing? Restart your phone — this fixes it 90% of the time.
- Can't scan the QR code? Most plans also include a manual installation option with codes you can type in.
- Still stuck? Contact us anytime at hello@chinacheckpick.com and we'll help you get online.
That's It!
Setting up an eSIM is genuinely easier than swapping a physical SIM card — no fiddly trays, no losing your home SIM, and you can have it ready before your trip even starts. Safe travels! 🌍
