Before you buy any travel eSIM, you need to know if your specific phone actually supports it. The fastest check takes 30 seconds. Here's how to do it for every major phone brand.
The 30-Second Universal Check
On any smartphone, go to:
- iPhone: Settings → Cellular → if you see 'Add eSIM' or 'Add Cellular Plan', your phone supports eSIM ✅
- Samsung: Settings → Connections → SIM Manager → if you see 'Add eSIM' or 'Add mobile plan' ✅
- Google Pixel: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → if you see a '+' button to add a SIM ✅
- Other Android: Settings → Mobile Network → SIM Management → look for 'Download SIM' or 'Add eSIM' ✅
If you don't see any of these options, your phone either doesn't support eSIM or is carrier-locked.

The Chinese-Market Phone Problem
This catches out a significant number of travelers. Many phones sold in mainland China — including iPhones, Samsung, and Huawei — ship with Chinese firmware that disables eSIM. If you bought your phone in China, check the settings before buying any eSIM plan.
The quickest test: Settings → look for 'Add eSIM' option. If it's not there, your specific device doesn't support eSIM regardless of what the global model spec sheet says.
