Italy is one of the world's most visited countries, and mobile coverage in cities is excellent on all networks. But the Amalfi Coast cliff roads, Cinque Terre hiking trails, and Sicilian countryside tell a different story. Here's the honest breakdown.
Italy's Three Main Networks
| Network | Urban Coverage | Rural / Coastal | Tourist Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| TIM (Telecom Italia) | ✅ Excellent nationwide | ✅ Best rural coverage | 🏆 Best for all of Italy |
| Vodafone Italy | ✅ Excellent in cities | ✅ Good coastal | Strong for cities + coasts |
| WindTre | ✅ Good major cities | ⚠️ Limited rural | Major cities only |
Our Italy eSIM uses TIM — Italy's largest network by infrastructure with the best coverage across the Italian peninsula, Sicily, Sardinia, and rural Tuscany.
Coverage by Destination
Rome
All networks excellent across the city. Colosseum, Vatican, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps: full 4G/5G on all operators. Rome Metro (underground): TIM and Vodafone maintain signal on most lines. For Rome-only trips, any eSIM is fine.
Amalfi Coast (Positano, Ravello, Amalfi)
One of the most spectacular and technically challenging drives in Europe:
- TIM: Works along most of the coastal road (SS163). Positano village: excellent. Ravello: good. Signal in tunnels: drops briefly.
- Vodafone: Good in main towns. Weaker on isolated clifftop sections.
- WindTre: Significant drops between towns on the coast road.
Cinque Terre (Five Villages)
The five villages (Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, Riomaggiore): TIM and Vodafone both good in villages. The Sentiero Azzurro coastal trail between villages: partial on TIM. No network guarantees signal on all cliff-side trail sections — download offline maps before hiking.
Florence and Tuscany
Florence city: all networks excellent. Tuscany countryside (Val d'Orcia, Chianti wine roads, San Gimignano, Montepulciano): TIM best throughout. Rural agriturismo stays: TIM typically reaches where others drop.
Venice
Venice island: all networks surprisingly good — dense population means strong coverage. Murano, Burano: TIM and Vodafone both work. Grand Canal, Rialto, St Mark's Square: excellent on all networks.
Sicily
Palermo and Catania: all networks good. Mount Etna (active volcano, 3,357m): TIM signal at visitor centre (1,900m). Summit crater area: limited on all networks — expected. Taormina: excellent TIM and Vodafone. Valle dei Templi (Agrigento): TIM good. Interior Sicily (roads between small towns): TIM essential — others drop on rural highways.
Dolomites
Cortina d'Ampezzo: all networks good in town. Cable car routes and hiking areas: TIM best at altitude. Via Ferrata routes: limited on all networks above treeline — always download offline maps for mountain hiking.
