Mexico eSIM 2026 — Telcel vs AT&T vs Movistar: Best Network for Tourists

Mexico has three major mobile networks, but the coverage gap between them is larger than almost any country tourists visit. Get this choice right and you'll have signal from Mexico City to the Copper Canyon. Get it wrong and you'll be offline in Oaxaca.

Mexico's Three Networks

Network Market Share City Coverage Rural Coverage Tourist Verdict
Telcel ~65% ✅ Excellent ✅ Best by far 🏆 Only choice for rural Mexico
AT&T Mexico ~25% ✅ Good ⚠️ Limited Major cities only
Movistar ~10% ⚠️ Moderate ❌ Poor Not recommended for tourists

Our Mexico eSIM uses Telcel — Mexico's dominant network and the only realistic choice for tourists exploring beyond resort areas.

Coverage by Destination

Cancun and Riviera Maya

All networks work in the hotel zone and downtown Cancun. Telcel and AT&T both provide good 4G. Tulum: Telcel excellent in town; weaker in jungle cenote areas (bring offline maps). Playa del Carmen: all networks good.

Mexico City (CDMX)

Excellent coverage on Telcel and AT&T throughout the city. Metro system: Telcel maintains signal on many lines; AT&T patchy underground. Xochimilco canals: Telcel good; others drop.

Oaxaca City and Region

Oaxaca city: Telcel excellent. Villages for Day of the Dead celebrations (Tlacolula, Mitla): Telcel only — AT&T has minimal presence. Monte Albán archaeological site: Telcel signal at ruins.

Copper Canyon (Barrancas del Cobre)

One of Mexico's most spectacular — and remote — destinations. El Chepe railway journey:

  • Telcel: Signal in main towns (Los Mochis, Creel, El Fuerte). Drops in canyon sections.
  • AT&T: Very limited outside Los Mochis.

Download offline maps for the entire Copper Canyon region before boarding El Chepe.

San Cristóbal de las Casas and Chiapas

Increasingly popular backpacker destination in southern Mexico. Telcel: good in San Cristóbal and Palenque ruins. Lagos de Montebello (jungle lakes near Guatemala border): Telcel only, sporadic.

Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta

Both cities: excellent Telcel and AT&T coverage. Highway between them: Telcel maintains signal; AT&T drops in mountain sections.
