Osaka Travel Guide 2026 — Dotonbori, Osaka Castle & Food Heaven on a Budget

Osaka is Japan's kitchen — and its most affordable major city. Tokyo travelers who add a few days in Osaka consistently say it's the highlight of their Japan trip. Here's why, and how to do it right.

Why Osaka is Japan's Best Food City

Osaka has a concept: kuidaore — eating until you drop. The city takes food more seriously than anywhere else in Japan. Street food on Dotonbori costs ¥200–500 per item. A 3-Michelin-star kaiseki meal in Osaka costs 30–40% less than the equivalent in Tokyo. Local expression: "Kyoto people spend their money on clothes. Osaka people spend their money on food."

Dotonbori — What to Eat and When to Go

The famous neon-lit canal street with the Glico running man sign. Best visited at night (7pm–midnight) when the neon reflects in the water. Must eat here:

  • 🐙 Takoyaki (octopus balls): Osaka's signature dish. Crispy outside, molten inside. Wanaka on Dotonbori is consistently excellent — ¥650 for 8 balls.
  • 🌮 Okonomiyaki: Osaka's savoury pancake. Mizuno on Dotonbori (queue worth it) or Fukutaro in Namba.
  • 🍢 Kushikatsu: Breaded and fried skewers. Rule: Never double-dip the sauce. Shinsekai neighbourhood is the traditional area for this.
  • 🍜 Ramen: Kinryu Ramen on Dotonbori, open 24 hours. ¥750 for a bowl that locals eat at 3am.

Osaka Castle

Osaka Castle is surrounded by a large park — free to enter the grounds. The castle keep itself (¥600) has a museum inside. Best views: the 8th floor observation deck. Cherry blossom season (late March–early April): castle park has 3,000 cherry trees — one of Japan's top hanami spots. Night illumination runs seasonally.

Shinsekai — Old Osaka Atmosphere

A neighbourhood that feels like 1950s Japan, built around Tsutenkaku Tower. Kushikatsu restaurants everywhere, retro signage, local pachinko parlours, and Spa World (massive public bathhouse complex, AED 900 all-day). Very different atmosphere from tourist Dotonbori — worth an evening.

Kuromon Ichiba Market

Osaka's "kitchen" market — 170 stalls selling fresh seafood, produce, and street food. Open from 9am, best visited on arrival as most stalls close by 4–5pm. Fresh oysters from ¥200 each. Best tuna sashimi in the city. Bring cash — many stalls don't take cards.
