The aurora borealis requires three things: darkness, clear sky, and solar activity. How to maximise your chances:

- Vedur.is website: Same data, browser version. Works on mobile.
- Best months: September to March. September and March have the most active aurora periods statistically.
- Get out of Reykjavik: Drive 30 minutes east or north for darker skies. Þingvellir is popular and dark.

Golden Circle — Must-See Route
A 300km loop from Reykjavik covering Iceland's three most famous sights:
- Þingvellir National Park: UNESCO site. Rift valley where North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet. Snorkelling/diving in Silfra fissure (book in advance).
- Geysir and Strokkur: The original geyser. Strokkur erupts every 5-10 minutes to 20-40m height. Telcel signal at the geysers for live video.

- Local tip: Laugardalslaug municipal pool in Reykjavik — AUD 10 entry. Locals' actual swimming pool. Hot pots and steam room. Zero tourists.
