Internet Access in China for Foreign Visitors: eSIM Setup Before Landing

Foreign visitors often need mobile data immediately after arriving in China—for airport pickup, hotel communication, navigation, translation and contact with local hosts. Preparing an eSIM before departure can reduce the time spent searching for a physical SIM after landing.

Step 1: Check whether the phone supports eSIM

Open the phone settings and confirm that an eSIM or digital SIM can be added. The device must also be unlocked by the original carrier. Compatibility varies by model and sales region, so confirm the exact model rather than relying only on the phone name.

Step 2: Select the correct travel period and data allowance

Choose a plan that covers the complete stay, including the arrival and departure days. Consider how the phone will be used:

  • Maps, messaging and email require relatively moderate data.
  • Video calls, social media uploads and cloud backups consume more data.
  • Hotspot sharing with a computer can significantly increase usage.

Step 3: Install before departure

Install the eSIM while connected to stable Wi-Fi. Do not delete it after installation. Many QR codes can only be used once, so repeated scanning may fail.

Label the line clearly, such as “China Travel Data,” so it can be identified easily after landing.

Step 4: Configure the data line after arrival

  1. Open the mobile or cellular settings.
  2. Turn on the installed China eSIM.
  3. Select it as the mobile-data line.
  4. Enable data roaming for that eSIM when required by the plan instructions.
  5. Wait for the phone to register on a supported local network.
  6. Restart the phone if the network does not appear after several minutes.

Keep the original SIM under control

The original SIM may remain active for calls and verification messages, but international roaming can create extra charges. Disable data switching or mobile data on the original line unless it is intentionally being used.
