Returning to China for Summer Break: A Mobile Internet Checklist for International Students

Travelling to China is easier when connectivity is prepared before departure. This guide focuses on practical steps that reduce arrival-day problems and help you stay reachable for study, travel, or business.

Prepare before departure

Returning home should be simple, but mobile connectivity can become stressful when you land, need to contact family, call a ride, check an address, or receive a university message. Before departure, confirm that your phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked. Update the operating system, save important addresses offline, and keep a screenshot of your accommodation, family contact details, and flight information.

Decide what you actually need

A student returning for a short holiday may mainly use messaging, maps, ride-hailing, email, music, and occasional video. A longer stay may require more data for online classes, remote work, cloud files, video calls, or hotspot use. Choose a plan by trip length and realistic daily usage rather than buying the smallest package automatically.

Install carefully

Install the eSIM while you still have stable Wi-Fi, but follow the activation instructions on the product page. Do not delete an installed eSIM just because it does not connect immediately. First check that the line is enabled, mobile data is assigned to the eSIM, data roaming is turned on when required, and the correct APN or network-selection instructions have been followed.

Keep a backup plan

Save the QR code, installation details, order number, and customer-service contact in more than one place. A screenshot on the phone plus a copy in email or cloud storage is useful. If you use a laptop or tablet, check whether hotspot sharing is supported by the selected plan before relying on it for study or work.

Before buying an eSIM

Confirm that your device supports eSIM, is carrier-unlocked, and matches the compatibility information on the product page. Review the plan's destination coverage, validity, activation timing, hotspot policy, and current app-access information. Product terms can change, so the product page and order instructions should be treated as the current source of truth.
