When several employees travel to China together, mobile connectivity should be planned as a team resource rather than left to each traveler at the airport. Buyers, sales teams, technicians, interpreters, and managers may separate during exhibitions or factory visits, so relying on a single phone hotspot can create unnecessary operational risk.
Give key travelers independent connectivity
Each employee who handles supplier communication, navigation, payments, transport, or client meetings should have an independent data connection. A shared hotspot can be useful for a laptop, but it should not be the only connection for the entire group. The hotspot owner may leave the venue, run out of battery, or attend a different meeting.
Collect device information in advance
Before purchasing, create a list of each traveler’s exact phone model and carrier-lock status. The device must support eSIM and be unlocked. Regional versions differ: many overseas versions of recent iPhone, Google Pixel, and Samsung Galaxy devices support eSIM, while mainland China versions of many phones generally do not.
Match data to each role
A manager using email and messaging may need less data than a product specialist uploading hundreds of photos and videos. Staff using video meetings, cloud drives, remote desktops, or laptop hotspots should receive larger allowances. Disable automatic backups and app updates to control unnecessary consumption.
Standardize installation instructions
Install the eSIMs before departure using stable Wi-Fi. Label each line clearly, save order details, and tell travelers not to delete an installed eSIM. On arrival, set the eSIM as the mobile-data line and enable data roaming for that line when required. Some plans may use international routing, but access and performance for specific applications vary by plan, carrier, device, location, network conditions, and applicable requirements.
Purchase channels
For a team recommendation, provide the number of travelers, all device models, trip dates, planned cities, job roles, expected hotspot use, and approximate data requirements. This makes it easier to assign suitable plans rather than purchasing the same allowance for everyone.
