Paris is the world's most visited city — and also the city most tourists see only a fraction of. Most stick to the 1st, 4th, and 7th arrondissements. Here's what you're missing — and how to see it.
The 15 Things Real Paris Visitors Do
1. Arrive at the Eiffel Tower at 9pm (Not 2pm)
The tower illuminates every hour on the hour after dark — 5-minute sparkle light show. The Champ-de-Mars lawn is filled with picnickers. No queue for the lawn. Wine from a nearby cave (wine shop) costs €8–12 a bottle. This is how Parisians experience the tower. The tourist experience at 2pm in a queue for 90 minutes is not it.
2. Walk Canal Saint-Martin (11th Arrondissement)
Iron footbridges, linden trees, waterside cafés. The Paris of French films. Weekend mornings when locals are out. No tourists. Excellent coffee at Ten Belles on the canal bank.
3. Eat at a Boulangerie for Every Meal
Croissant (€1.30) + café (€1.50) = €2.80 breakfast. Better than any hotel breakfast. For lunch: jambon-beurre baguette sandwich (€4–5). French law requires boulangeries to make bread on-site — quality is consistent everywhere. Google Maps shows every one within 200 metres of you at all times.
4. Take the Batobus Instead of the Metro Once
Hop-on hop-off boat along the Seine — stops at Eiffel Tower, Orsay, Notre-Dame, Jardin des Plantes, Hôtel de Ville, Louvre, and Champs-Élysées. Day pass €20. Beautiful way to see the city. Far less crowded than a cruise.
5. Go to Marché d'Aligre (Saturday Morning)
The most authentic open-air market in Paris. Fruit, vegetables, cheese, wine, vintage clothing. Very few tourists. 12th arrondissement. Cafés surrounding it are excellent and cheap.
6. Climb Montmartre Before 8am
Sacré-Cœur at sunrise with Paris below and almost no one else there. The neighbourhood's artists' squares and winding streets without the afternoon selfie crowds. Get the authentic village-within-a-city experience that disappears by 10am.
7. Skip the Louvre Line, Book 20 Days Ahead
Louvre timed entry tickets book out 3+ weeks during peak season. You cannot buy tickets at the door — online only. Book at louvre.fr. Without a ticket you queue 2+ hours and may not get in. With a timed ticket: walk straight to the Winged Victory, Vénus de Milo, Mona Lisa.
8. Visit Palais Royal Gardens (Free, Underrated)
One block from the Louvre. Beautiful gardens, Buren columns, luxury boutiques in the arcades, excellent independent restaurants. Almost no tourists. A perfect lunch spot.
9. Eat Vietnamese in the 13th Arrondissement
Paris has one of the world's largest Vietnamese communities, concentrated in the 13th. Pho and bánh mì better than many restaurants in Vietnam itself. Avenue de Choisy is the main street. Half the price of tourist-area restaurants.
10. Take the RER B to Versailles — Not the Line M
RER C goes to Versailles Rive Gauche — further from the château entrance. RER B to Versailles Chantiers is closer. Visit Tuesday–Sunday (closed Monday). Gardens are free most days except musical fountain shows. Pre-book palace tickets at chateauversailles.fr.

- Buy a carnet of 10 tickets (cheaper per journey) or use contactless card — works directly on metro gates since 2022
- Line 14 (automated, no driver) is the fastest east-west line
- Avoid line 13 at rush hour — extremely crowded
- Google Maps is accurate for Paris metro routing but check for line closures via RATP app
