What is ETIAS?
ETIAS is the EU's pre-registration system, similar to the USA's ESTA or Australia's ETA. It is not a visa — it's an authorization linked to your passport, valid for 3 years or until your passport expires.

How to Apply for ETIAS
- Go to travel.ec.europa.eu (official site — €7 fee)
- Enter passport details, travel history, health questions
- Pay €7 by card
- Receive confirmation email (usually within minutes)
- Authorization is linked to your passport — you don't need to print anything
- Border officers check it digitally when you arrive

Why You Need Mobile Data at EU Borders in 2026
At land borders (especially popular crossings like France-Spain, Germany-Austria, or Netherlands-Belgium), some travelers are asked to show their ETIAS confirmation email or reference number. Having this accessible without Wi-Fi — stored in email or as a screenshot — is important.
More practically: if your ETIAS application is still processing when you arrive at the border (rare but possible), you need data to check your email for the authorization. This is a new reason beyond the usual navigation/Maps argument for having mobile data active from the moment you enter Europe.
