After Your China Trip: Turn Off or Delete the Travel eSIM?

Travelers often delete immediately to tidy the SIM list. Turning it off is safer when the plan may still be valid, a return trip is possible or support needs to inspect the order.

Do not confuse installation with a working connection

An eSIM profile can be correctly installed while showing no destination service, and a phone can show signal while the wrong line carries mobile data. Separate four stages: order delivery, profile installation, network registration and real data transfer. A new webpage loading with Wi-Fi off is the clearest basic success test.

Turning off preserves the profile on the phone; deleting removes it. Neither action changes the product's original expiry or refund terms.

The safest diagnostic sequence

1. Confirm the current country, city and whether the selected product covers that location.
2. Open SIM settings and verify that the profile still exists and is switched on.
3. Make sure “China Data” is selected for mobile data.
4. Turn home-line data roaming and automatic data switching off.
5. Apply the selected product's exact roaming and APN instructions.
6. Turn Wi-Fi off and open a new ordinary webpage.
7. Only then test maps, messaging, payment and work apps.

Change one layer at a time. If several settings are changed together, it becomes difficult to know what solved the problem or created a new one.

How to interpret the result

Signal bars and a 4G or 5G icon do not prove which SIM is using data. Conversely, a line that shows No Service outside its covered destination may still be installed correctly. Location, time and selected line matter.

A safe end-of-trip sequence

Select the home SIM for data, apply the home carrier's normal settings, switch China Data off and verify ordinary service. Save the order and any usage record before deciding whether to delete.

If the product is single-use or non-reinstallable, deletion should be treated as permanent.

Compatibility checks before purchase

The exact phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. Look for Add eSIM, Add Cellular Plan or SIM Manager. Model families can vary by country of purchase, so record the full model number and sales region. A travel eSIM cannot unlock a phone or add missing eSIM hardware.

Choose mainland China coverage for a mainland-only trip. Compare the China/Hong Kong/Macau product when data is also required in Hong Kong or Macau. The order must cover every destination and every travel date.

Protect the QR code and installed profile

A QR code may be single-use. Keep it private, do not post it publicly and do not scan repeatedly. If the profile appears in the SIM list, preserve it while troubleshooting. Deleting it can remove the most useful evidence and may require new installation details.

Do not keep the travel line selected for data after returning home, and do not assume an expired profile can be reused.

Choose enough data for testing and travel

Compare 5GB for controlled maps, translation, payments and text; 10GB for regular navigation, photos and limited video; and 20GB when video calls, streaming, uploads or laptop hotspot are significant. These are planning categories, not guaranteed usage figures.

Disable app updates, original-quality cloud backup and video autoplay. Repeated speed tests can consume fixed data without proving long-term stability. Check whether the allowance is total or daily, when validity starts and what happens after high-speed data is used.

Network stability is more than peak speed

Test two new webpages, one map search, one compressed image and a short low-resolution video. If hotspot matters, connect one computer for ten minutes after pausing updates. Real-world speed varies with phone bands, indoor signal, location, movement and network load.

A stable 4G connection can be more useful than a brief 5G peak. Airports, hotels, underground stations, exhibition halls and high-speed trains can all produce different results.
