Preparing mobile data before the flight helps you avoid searching for connectivity after landing, especially when you need maps, transport information, hotel messages, or family contact details immediately.
Check the phone before buying
Confirm two points: the phone must support eSIM, and it must be carrier-unlocked. The same phone series can have different regional versions. An overseas iPhone may support eSIM while a mainland China version of the same generation may not. Check the model number in Settings and provide it to the seller before purchase.
Prepare important apps and accounts
Update your email, messaging, payment, translation, map, airline, train, and university apps before departure. Make sure you can sign in and that account recovery methods are available. Some plans may use international routing, but access to specific services varies according to the purchased plan, network route, device, location, carrier conditions, and applicable requirements.
Install while you have stable Wi-Fi
Do not wait until the airport arrival hall. Install the eSIM before departure, but follow the activation instructions carefully because some plans begin validity at installation while others begin when they first connect to a supported network. After installation, keep the eSIM on the phone and never delete it unless support confirms that deletion is required.
Use data efficiently
Maps, messaging, and light browsing usually consume less data than video streaming, cloud photo backup, or hotspot sharing. Disable automatic app updates and photo backup if you want to preserve the allowance. Download entertainment and large files over Wi-Fi before traveling between cities.
Review available purchase channels
Provide your travel dates, exact phone model, expected data volume, and whether you will share a hotspot with a laptop or another phone. A short family visit and a month-long study break require different data planning.
