There are dozens of Europe eSIM options in 2026. Most reviews are written by affiliates who've never actually tested the product in rural Tuscany or on a Greek island ferry. This guide is based on what actually matters when you're traveling: does it work where you need it, and is the price honest?
What Makes a Good Europe eSIM
Before comparing options, here's what actually matters for European travel:
- Coverage in all Schengen countries — not just France, Germany, Italy. Does it work in Slovenia, Malta, Luxembourg?
- Roaming partner quality — which local carrier does the eSIM connect to in each country? This determines rural coverage.
- True unlimited vs throttled — many "unlimited" plans throttle to 128 kbps after a threshold. That's unusable for Maps.
- Price per GB for realistic data amounts — a 1GB plan sounds cheap but runs out in 3 days.

Greece Island Tip — The One Coverage Exception
Greek islands are the one place where European eSIMs can struggle. Santorini, Mykonos, and Rhodes (large islands) have good coverage. Smaller islands like Folegandros, Sikinos, or Anafi have limited 4G and sometimes 2G only. Download offline maps before taking ferries to small islands.
The ETIAS Factor — 2026 Update
Starting 2026, non-EU travelers need ETIAS authorization to enter the Schengen Area. You'll need internet to register and receive your authorization confirmation. Having a working eSIM before you land — or at least at the border — is now more important than it used to be.
