Iceland is one of the world's most dramatic destinations — geysers, glaciers, volcanoes, waterfalls, and the Northern Lights, all on an island the size of England with only 370,000 people. Here is the complete 2026 guide.
Iceland eSIM Coverage
Iceland has two main networks: Síminn and Nova (plus roaming on Vodafone IS). Our Europe eSIM covers Iceland. Coverage note: Reykjavik and the Ring Road (Route 1) around the island is generally well covered by Síminn. Interior F-roads (highland routes, 4WD only): no coverage — expected wilderness.
Top Experiences
| Experience | Signal | Key Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Northern Lights | Signal at most viewing areas outside city | Use the Vedur.is app (Icelandic Met Office) for real-time aurora forecasts. Requires data. Season: September to March. |
| Golden Circle (Geysir, Gullfoss, Thingvellir) | Síminn good throughout | Half-day from Reykjavik. Book rental car on Rentalcars.com. No public transport to Golden Circle. |
| Blue Lagoon | Excellent at facility | Must pre-book at bluelagoon.com — walk-ins not accepted. Book months ahead in summer. |
| Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon | Síminn partial at lagoon | 5 hours east of Reykjavik. Diamond Beach (ice on black sand) is next to the lagoon — one of Iceland's best photographs. |
| Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss Waterfalls | Good at both falls | You can walk behind Seljalandsfoss. Skogafoss is the most photogenic — rainbow in spray on sunny mornings. |
| Snæfellsnes Peninsula | Síminn on main roads, drops on peninsula tip | Jules Verne's Journey to the Centre of the Earth setting. Stykkisholmur is the most charming town in Iceland outside Reykjavik. |
Northern Lights Chase — Why You Need Data
Chasing the Northern Lights requires real-time data at all times:
- Vedur.is app: Official Icelandic Met Office aurora forecast 0-9 scale and cloud cover map. Without data, you are driving blind.
- My Aurora Forecast: Alternative app with global aurora predictions.
- Strategy: Base in Reykjavik. Check forecast after 9pm. If scale is 4+ and clouds are clear, drive 30 minutes south or east of the city to escape light pollution. Signal stays good on Ring Road.
Iceland Practical Tips 2026
- Currency: ISK (Icelandic Krona). Cards accepted virtually everywhere including roadside hotdog stands. Carry almost no cash.
- Hotdog at Baejarins Beztu Pylsur (Reykjavik harbour): ISK 600 (about USD 4). Bill Clinton famously ate here. Iceland's most iconic food.
- Weather: Changes every 20 minutes. Pack waterproofs even in summer. Check forecast obsessively with Vedur.is.
- Driving: Speed limits strictly enforced. Speed cameras on all main roads. Sheep on roads — they have priority.
