Tram 28 (Eléctrico 28) ✅ Excellent throughout route The iconic tram through Alfama hills — get on at Martim Moniz early morning to avoid queues. Watch pockets.
Alfama (Fado quarter) ✅ Good in narrow lanes Fado houses are intimate and emotional. Typical dinner + fado show from €35. Book ahead at weekends.
São Jorge Castle (Castelo) ✅ Excellent hilltop views Views over all of Lisbon. Combine with Alfama walk downhill.
Sintra day trip (40min by train) ✅ NOS/Vodafone good in Sintra town and Pena Palace grounds Trains from Rossio station every 30 minutes. Buy Pena Palace tickets online — sells out.
Belém (trams + cafés) ✅ Excellent Belém Tower + Jerónimos Monastery. Queue for original pastéis de nata at Pastéis de Belém bakery (since 1837).

What to Eat in Lisbon

  • Pastel de nata: Custard tart, warm from the oven. Pastéis de Belém is historic but any good padaria has great ones.
  • Bacalhau (salt cod): 365 ways to cook it — supposedly one for every day of the year. Try Bacalhau com natas (with cream) at a tascas (traditional restaurant).
  • Prego: Steak sandwich. Cheap, delicious, in any café.
  • Bifanas: Pork sandwich in sauce — the true Lisbon street food. Cervejaria Trindade or any tasca.
  • Ginjinha (cherry liqueur): Shot at a ginjinha bar in Chiado — a Lisbon institution.

Getting Around Lisbon

  • Tram 28 — iconic but slow and packed. Worth doing once for the experience.
  • Elevadores (funiculars) — Bica, Glória, Lavra — €4 single, worth using to climb Lisbon's famous hills
  • Metro: 4 lines, covers most of the city outside the hills. Buy Viva Viagem card at any station.
  • Bolt rideshare: Very affordable in Lisbon, excellent for moving between hills.
