My Phone Says 'No Service' After Installing eSIM — 7 Fixes That Actually Work

You've scanned the QR code, the eSIM installed successfully, but your phone shows 'No Service' or 'Searching...' and nothing works. This is the most common eSIM problem and it's almost always fixable in under 5 minutes. Here are the 7 fixes in order of how often they solve it.

Fix #1: Enable Data Roaming (Fixes 60% of Cases)

This is the most common cause. When you install a travel eSIM, Data Roaming is off by default on most phones.

iPhone: Settings → Cellular → tap your eSIM plan → turn on Data Roaming

Samsung: Settings → Connections → SIM Manager → tap your eSIM → enable Allow data roaming

Google Pixel: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → tap your eSIM → enable Roaming

Wait 30 seconds after enabling. Signal bars should appear.

Fix #2: Make Sure the eSIM Is Set as Your Data SIM

Having two SIMs means your phone needs to know which one to use for data.

iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data → select your eSIM (not your home SIM)

Android: Settings → Connections → SIM Manager → Mobile Data → select your eSIM

Fix #3: Restart Your Phone

After installing an eSIM profile, a full power-off restart (not just sleep) is often needed to register with the local network. Power off completely → wait 10 seconds → power on. Check for signal after 60 seconds.

Fix #4: Check Your Phone Is Unlocked

A carrier-locked phone rejects foreign eSIM profiles. Symptoms: eSIM installs but shows 'Invalid SIM' or 'No Service' permanently.

iPhone check: Settings → General → About → scroll to 'Carrier Lock' — should say 'No SIM Restrictions'

If locked: Contact your home carrier (AT&T, Verizon, EE, O2, etc.) and request an unlock. Most carriers unlock immediately for out-of-contract customers. After unlock, restart and try again.

Fix #5: You Haven't Arrived in the Coverage Area Yet

eSIMs are destination plans — they only activate signal when you're in the country they cover. A Japan eSIM installed in London shows 'No Service' until you land in Japan. This is normal. Enable it when you arrive.

Fix #6: Manual APN Settings

Occasionally a travel eSIM requires manual APN (Access Point Name) settings to connect. Check your purchase confirmation email — it may include APN details.

iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data Network → enter APN details

Android: Settings → Connections → Mobile Networks → Access Point Names → Add new APN

If your provider didn't send APN details, contact their support.

Fix #7: Delete and Reinstall the eSIM Profile

If all else fails, delete the eSIM profile and reinstall it.

iPhone: Settings → Cellular → tap your eSIM → Remove Cellular Plan → confirm → re-scan QR code

Android: Settings → Connections → SIM Manager → tap eSIM → Delete eSIM → re-scan

⚠️ Important: Some eSIM providers only allow 1-3 installs per QR code. Contact support before deleting if you're unsure.
