Rome is called the Eternal City because no matter how many times you visit, you discover something new. For first-timers, it can feel overwhelming. Good mobile data — and a few insider tips — makes all the difference.
Rome eSIM Coverage
TIM, Vodafone, and WindTre all provide excellent 4G/5G coverage throughout Rome. Our Italy eSIM uses TIM — Italy's largest network with the best coverage inside historic sites, underground Vatican corridors, and Rome Metro tunnels.
Must-Visit Sites + Data Tips
| Site | Signal | Booking Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Colosseum | ✅ Excellent on all levels | Book online at coopculture.it — skip-the-line queues are 2–3 hours without booking |
| Vatican Museums & Sistine Chapel | ✅ Good inside (thick walls reduce signal) | Book at museivaticani.va. Entry sells out weeks ahead in peak season. |
| Trevi Fountain | ✅ Excellent | Go at 6am — by 9am it's shoulder-to-shoulder. Night is also beautiful and less crowded. |
| Pantheon | ✅ Excellent outside, reduced inside dome | Now requires ticket (€5). Queue is manageable — no online booking needed. |
| Roman Forum & Palatine Hill | ✅ Good throughout open-air site | Included with Colosseum ticket. Spend 1.5–2 hours here — most tourists skip it. |
| Trastevere neighbourhood | ✅ Excellent | Best area for dinner. Arrive after 7:30pm for authentic atmosphere. |
Getting Around Rome
- Walking: Historic centre is compact — Colosseum to Trevi Fountain is 25 minutes on foot
- Metro: Only 3 lines. Line A connects Vatican, Spanish Steps, Termini. Line B connects Colosseum, Termini.
- Bolt / Free Now: Rideshare apps work well in Rome. Uber operates but more expensive.
- Avoid taxis at Termini station: Use apps or official white taxis (not unmarked cars offering rides)
What First-Timers Always Get Wrong
- 🏛️ Not booking Vatican or Colosseum in advance — this ruins entire days waiting in queues
- 🚰 Rome's tap water is drinkable and excellent. Refill at nasoni (street fountains) — saves money and plastic
- 🍝 Eating on Via della Conciliazione (Vatican street) — tourist trap. Walk 2 blocks for local prices
- 👕 Shoulders and knees must be covered to enter Vatican and major churches — pack a scarf
- 🕐 Many museums close Monday. Check before going.
