Thailand eSIM 2026 — AIS vs DTAC vs True Move: Which Network Is Best for Tourists?

Thailand has three main mobile networks — AIS, True Move (DTAC merged with True in 2023), and smaller operators. For tourists, the choice of which network your eSIM uses matters more than most people realise, especially once you leave Bangkok.

The Three Networks: Quick Summary

Network Market Share 4G Coverage 5G Tourist Verdict
AIS ~45% Widest nationwide ✅ Bangkok + major cities 🏆 Best for most tourists
True Move ~40% Strong in cities ✅ Bangkok + Phuket Good in cities
DTAC (now True) Merged 2023 Integrated with True ⚠️ Limited Being phased in

Our Thailand eSIM routes through AIS — the reason explained below.

Coverage Breakdown by Destination

Bangkok

All networks perform well in Bangkok. 4G speeds of 30–150 Mbps are typical on all three. 5G available on AIS and True in central areas (Sukhumvit, Silom, Siam). For Bangkok only, any network works fine.

Chiang Mai City

All three networks have good coverage in the city, Nimman area, and Old City. AIS slightly better in outlying areas like San Kamphaeng and Mae Jo.

Chiang Mai → Pai (Mountain Road)

This is where networks diverge significantly. The 762 curves on Route 1095 to Pai are notoriously challenging for signal:

  • AIS: Maintains 3G–4G signal through most of the route. Drops to 2G in deepest mountain sections.
  • True Move: Drops to 2G or no signal on significant stretches.
  • Why it matters: Google Maps offline works, but you can't receive WhatsApp messages or load anything new until signal returns.

Phuket

Excellent coverage on all networks across Phuket town, Patong, Kata, Karon, Rawai. AIS and True both perform well. Even the west coast beaches have reliable 4G.

Koh Samui

Good coverage in Chaweng, Lamai, and tourist areas. AIS and True both work. Interior roads have weaker signal on all networks — download maps before heading to waterfalls.

Smaller Islands: Koh Tao, Koh Phangan, Koh Lanta

Coverage exists but is variable. Main beaches have 4G. Remote areas drop to 3G or 2G. AIS generally maintains signal slightly further into remote areas than True.

Doi Inthanon (Highest Peak in Thailand)

AIS is the only network with any usable signal at the summit (2,565m). True drops out several kilometres before the peak. If you're hiking Thailand's highest mountain, AIS matters.

Khao Yai National Park

Variable coverage in the park. Visitor centre and main roads: AIS good. Deep forest trails: no signal on any network — expected and fine, download offline maps before entry.
