Thailand's islands are the dream — turquoise water, white sand, and some of the world's best diving. Mobile coverage varies dramatically between islands. Here's the real picture for each major destination.
Thailand Island Coverage Overview
| Island | AIS | True Move | Best Network | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Koh Samui | ✅ Excellent | ✅ Good | AIS or True | Well covered tourist island |
| Koh Phangan | ✅ Very good | ✅ Good beaches | AIS | Interior roads: AIS only |
| Koh Tao | ✅ Good main areas | ⚠️ Limited | AIS | Remote bays: AIS partial |
| Koh Lanta | ✅ Good west coast | ⚠️ Towns only | AIS | East coast: AIS partial |
| Koh Lipe | ✅ Adequate | ❌ Poor | AIS only | Remote southernmost island |
| Koh Chang | ✅ Good west coast | ✅ Good | AIS or True | East coast jungle: limited all |
| Koh Kood | ⚠️ Partial | ❌ Very limited | AIS only | Remote island, AIS best but patchy |
Koh Samui — Most Developed
Koh Samui is well connected throughout the island. Chaweng beach: excellent AIS and True. Lamai: both good. Fisherman's Village (Bo Phut): excellent. Ang Thong Marine Park (boat trip from Samui): no signal on the marine islands — expected, you're in the middle of the gulf.
Koh Phangan — Full Moon Party Night
Hat Rin beach (Full Moon Party location): AIS and True both work. The beach at peak party time gets congested with 20,000+ people — mobile networks slow significantly during the event as towers become overloaded. Download everything you need before arriving. For navigation back after the party, offline Google Maps is more reliable than live navigation.
Interior roads between Hat Rin and Thong Nai Pan: AIS maintains signal. True drops on jungle mountain sections.
Koh Tao — Diver's Island
Mae Haad pier and main town: AIS good. Sairee Beach (main beach strip): AIS excellent. Dive sites offshore: no signal underwater or on boats far from shore. Tanote Bay and Ao Leuk (remote east coast bays): AIS partial, True very limited. Bring offline maps for scooter rides around the island.
Koh Lipe — Thailand's Maldives
Koh Lipe is Thailand's southernmost tourist island, 4km from the Malaysian border. Coverage is limited but improving:
- Walking Street (main strip): AIS 4G works
- Sunrise Beach and Sunset Beach: AIS signal, speeds slower
- Pattaya Beach (main ferry pier): AIS works
- Snorkeling islands (Koh Adang, Koh Rawi): no signal on nearby islands
Practical Tips for Island Travel
- ✅ Download Google Maps offline for each island before taking a ferry
- ✅ Screenshot your accommodation address and location pin
- ✅ AIS is the right call for any multi-island hopping itinerary
- ⚠️ On ferry crossings between islands: no signal, use offline entertainment
- 📱 Signal returns immediately on docking at the pier
