Coverage by Destination — Where It Really Matters
Ha Giang Loop — The Ultimate Test
The Ha Giang Loop in northern Vietnam is one of Southeast Asia's most spectacular motorbike routes. It's also one of the most remote areas any tourist visits. This is where networks diverge dramatically:
- Viettel: Signal through most of the main loop roads. Drops in deepest mountain valleys between towns — expected. Towns like Dong Van and Meo Vac have signal.
- Vinaphone / Mobifone: Works in Ha Giang town. Drops significantly within 30km of starting the loop.
⚠️ Download offline maps for the entire loop before leaving Ha Giang town. No network guarantees signal in the mountains.
Sapa and the Northern Highlands
- Sapa town: All networks good. 4G speeds 20–60 Mbps.
- Fansipan peak (3,143m — highest in Indochina): Viettel maintains signal at the summit station. Others drop out.
- Rice terrace trekking routes (Muong Hoa Valley): Viettel on main paths. Off-trail: no signal on any network.
Ha Long Bay / Lan Ha Bay Cruises
On the water between limestone karsts:
- Near shore and main bay: Viettel and Vinaphone have signal.
- Anchored overnight in remote coves: No reliable signal on any network — this is part of the experience.
- Ha Long Bay town (before boarding): Full 4G on all networks.
Hoi An and Da Nang
Excellent coverage on all networks. 4G speeds 30–100 Mbps. The beach road between Da Nang and Hoi An: all networks good. Da Nang airport: all networks excellent.
Phu Quoc Island
Main tourist areas (Duong Dong, Long Beach, Phu Quoc town): excellent coverage on Viettel and Vinaphone. Northern parts of the island (Vinpearl Safari area, Ganh Dau Cape): Viettel maintains signal; others weaker.
Mekong Delta
Can Tho and main towns: all networks good. River tours and small island homestays: Viettel best. Very remote waterways: limited on all networks.
Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi
All three networks perform excellently in both cities. 4G speeds 30–150 Mbps. Grab rides, Google Maps, Instagram — all work perfectly on any network in urban areas.
